May 28, 2005 ~ Against Miami

The temperature at game time was over 100 degrees on the field, the Xplosion team was flagged 17 times for over 160 yards in penalties, but it didn’t stop them from improving their record to (7-0) with a 34-0 win over the Miami Fury.

This game started after the Xplosion’s defense made quick work of Miami going three plays and out. Charmaine Chin ran the punt back 22 yards and the offense went to work at Miami’s 35 yard line. Takela Corbitt, (12 rushes for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns), took it in the end zone and the Xplosion quickly went ahead 6-0. The extra point by Jessalyn Martin was good and the lead was 7-0.

After the ensuing kickoff, Captain cornerback Krystal “Shorty” Holmes picked off her first interception of the game and ran it back for the Xplosion’s next score. The extra point was good again by Martin and the game was 14-0. The next possession would be much of the same, as cornerback Holmes once again received her second “pick” of the game and the ball was back in the hands of the offense.

"What can I say about this woman,” Head Coach Phil Beniamino said. “I’ve changed her nickname from Shorty to Velcro seeing how she always sticks to you, She’s by far one of, if not, the best cornerbacks in the league.”

"...she's by far one of, if not, the best cornerback in the league."

The offense then took the ball to the Miami’s 5 yard line were Miami intercepted the pass and the Xplosion’s threat would end. The defense, lead by Jeanice Bailey and Dee Ember with 4 tackles each continued to apply the pressure. After Ember’s sack, the Xplosion once again took over on downs after Chin returned the kick another 23 yards to the 47-yard line. The offense went to work with their “ground and pound” technique and after a 15 yard run by Keisha Hamilton, (5 carries for 34 yards); the Xplosion grew their lead to 20. Once again Martin was perfect and the score became 21-0.

The Miami Fury decided to go back to the air which led to the Xplosion’s third interception of the day. This came by captain, Stephanie “Lil-Bit” Thomas (3 tackles). QB Sue Cackowski connected for 26 yards to Takela Corbitt, with the point afterward by Martin; the score at halftime was 28-0.

The second half was more of the same as the Xplosion’s defense continued to impress those in the stands. The Miami QB attempted to throw the ball 18 times, only completing four of them, and unfortunately for her team, they were all to the Xplosion. Cherie “Re-Re” Collins (3 tackles and one sack) received the Xplosion’s fourth interception of the day.

“It’s good to see these girls get the chance to prove what a great secondary we have,” Beniamino stated. “This defense is the COMPLETE PACKAGE!”

"This defense is the COMPLETE PACKAGE!"

The offense finished their 212 yards rushing attack with Takela Corbitt’s third touchdown of the game, which finalized their win 34-0.

This week promises to be a “huge” game for the Xplosion as they travel to Jacksonville to face the Dixie Blues, who are looking to avenge their only defeat of the year, which was at the hands of the Xplosion.

“We have a lot of respect for that team and their organization,” Beniamino added. “Their team is well coached and has plenty of talent. It should be a fun game to come watch!”

After the Xplosion's trip to Jacksonville on June 4th, they rest and come home to play the Tampa Bay Terminators June 11th at 7:00 p.m. at Campbell High School, Lil’ Usher will entertain the crowd during halftime.
