April 23, 2005 ~ Against Baton Rouge

XPLOSION OFF TO 4-0 START!

Saturday, the ATLANTA XPLOSION rolled over the Baton Rouge Wildcats 63-0 to increase their record to 4-0. A windy night in Louisiana didn’t stop the Xplosion’s offense from moving the ball over 366 total yards.

“The offensive line just did a great job again in dominating the line of scrimmage,” Head Coach Phil Beniamino exclaimed. Leading the pack with 4 touchdown runs for the night was Captain Charmaine Chin (9 carries for 112 yards).

“It’s so exciting to watch her run this season. She’s not just running around people this year, but running over them,” stated Beniamino. Next in line with 3 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns is Keisha Hamilton.

“This 5 foot one, 111 lbs. rookie is nothing less than pure dynamite. She’s small but makes a HUGE bang when ever she touches the ball, and she’s getting better each week.” If that wasn’t enough running power from the Xplosion, they go to their captain fullback Takela “TC” Corbitt (3 carries for 60 yards) and 1 touchdown.

“This is the full package, TC can run with breakaway speed and has unbelievable blocking power,” said Beniamino. Rookie Jasmine Frederick rounded out the running backs with her first touchdown of her football career. Atlanta’s “Darkside” Defense was just as relentless. Led by #55 Jeanice Bailey with 9 tackles, 3 of them sacks; and superb defensive back play by Kristal “Shorty” Holmes, with one interception for a touchdown. The Xplosion defense didn’t allow any positive yards in this game.

“Our Defense is crazy right now,” Beniamino says. “They are so hungry for the ball, it bothers them when the offense is on the field because that’s where they want to be.” Kiwanni 'KK' Gibson rounded out the day with her first interception of the year.

“This is a special group. They continue to get better when you don’t think they can.” The biggest surprise of the game was watching kicker Jessalyn Martin go a perfect, 7 for 7 in extra point attempts even with the high winds.

“During warm-ups she was kicking 40 yard field goals with the wind to her back. She’s pleasant to watch and she is still learning the game.” The Xplosion continues their road schedule heading to Orlando to play the Mayhem this Saturday the 30th at 7:00 p.m. For directions to the game you can visit their website at www.orlandomayhem.com.

“We can’t wait to bring this level of play back to the fans in Atlanta”, says Beniamino “ One more game on the road and then we are back.”
