Atlanta Xplosion Stay Perfect at 5-0!
The Atlanta Xplosion Women's football team increased their record this
year with a win over the Baton Rouge Wildcats Saturday by a score of
36-0. This puts them on top of their division with a perfect 5-0
record this year.
The Xplosion opened up defensively setting the tone for the whole
game. Leading team tackler for the game #92 Shaakira Hassell
began the first series with two of her 6 tackles, both for losses.
This forced the Wildcats to punt.
Then, Captain #83 Cheryl Luther took the punt backs 40 yards to
the Wildcat's 8-yard line. One play later, #26 Takela Corbitt,
(11 carries for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns) found herself in the
end zone for her first score of the day and the Xplosion drew
first blood 6-0. Quarterback #15 Kimberly Watson, making her
first start of the year, connected on her first throw to #81
DeDe Hutcherson and the score grew to 8-0.
The relentless defense continued to play hard, and #92 Shaakira
Hassell would eventually recover her first fumble of the game,
and give the Xplosion the ball again with great field position.
Two plays later and #26 Takela Corbitt went 26 yards for her
second touchdown of the game. "Corbitt ran real hard today,"
Beniamino added. "She's coming off an injury but proved
tonight that she's back to 100 percent." Angie Mickel kicked
the extra point this time and the score was Xplosion 15, Baton
Rouge 0.
The next set of downs belonged to Xplosion's Linebacker #56
Kiwanii Ash, (5 tackles). Here she recorded three of her
5 tackles of the game, and the Xplosion's offense went back
to work. "Ash is one heck of a football player," Beniamino
stated. "She is one of the best defensive players I've
seen in the league over the last four years. She has a
knack for the ball and always seems to punish you if you
have it. She's a fun player to watch."
After great field position from the special teams, Louisiana
native #43 D'lon Herbert finished the drive with a 7 yard
carry and her first score of the game. Mickel stayed perfect
on the point after, and the score grew to 22-0. Herbert
would also score again on a 43-yard touchdown grab for her
second touchdown of the game. "D'lon played extremely well
for us today. She definitely brought her "A" game home today
for her fans. I'm very proud of her after all she has been
through," stated Beniamino. "This girl has been through a
lot of adversity since Hurricane Katrina and she's proved
the type of desire she has to play this game. It's
Unbelievable!"
The Xplosion's defense continued knocking the Baton Rouge
Wildcats around. Linebackers, #51 Kandice Mitchell
(6 tackles), and #2 Toni Fuller (5 tackles, one interception,
and fumble recovery) helped to keep the Wildcats from seeing
the end zone.
The offense would score again when Quarterback #15 Kim
Watson would take it 20 yards to the end zone. Mickel
stayed perfect for the game with extra points and that is
how they finished the game 36-0.
The Xplosion now come home this week Saturday at 6:00 for
a game against division rival Miami. This should be a
great game to come see. For tickets, go to www.atlantaxplosion.com.
