The Xplosion Punishes the Punishers 62-0

The Atlanta Xplosion made it look easy Saturday, May 26 against the Palm Beach Punishers, scoring nine times in the contest to win 62-0.

It was win number four for the defending IWFL national champions. In fact, the Xplosion hasn't lost a game since June 24, 2006 when they were beat 42-7 by the Detroit Demolition. The Xplosion went on to avenge that loss by beating the Demolition in the 2006 championship game.

Despite Saturday's lopsided victory, the team showed class against their opponents. Following the contest, both teams huddled at midfield and chanted "Women's Football" before heading to the showers.

Xplosion linebacker Kiwani Ash addressed the Punishers and urged them to keep their heads up. "Despite all, you never gave up," Ash said. "As time moves on, you can only get stronger."

Xplosion quarterback Cheryl Glover, who threw touchdown strikes of 17 and 12 yards, has been with the Xplosion since inception. She remembers the tumultuous years of establishing and building the fan base of the now championship organization.

"The IWFL is about celebrating women's football," Glover said. " I remember when we couldn't secure venues to play at, let alone have fans to run up the score for. We've definitely come a long way."

The Xplosion took advantage of six Palm Beach turnovers, four of them in the first half leading to a 40-0 score going into halftime. The team returned to the gridiron scoring twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth.

Even the Xplosion's vaulted defense got some scoring in. In the second period, defensive lineperson Charisse Moore scooped up a Palm Beach fumble and raced nine yards the other way into the end zone.

In the fourth quarter, Xplosion defensive back Althea McNichol picked off a Punisher pass at midfield and came within a few yards of returning it all the way.

"I had a defender in front of me and was trying to anticipate which way she was going and I stepped out of bounds," McNichol said.

The game ball went to another veteran Xplosion player, linebacker/defensive end Carla Odom. She had four unassisted tackles in the game. Against Orlando, Odom had nine solo shots and assisted on two others.

The Xplosion will enjoy another bye week before packing gear and heading to Louisiana to face the Shreveport Aftershock. That team, also in their first year in the IWFL, is 3-2. They too are off the weekend of June 2. For more information on the Atlanta Xplosion please visit us on the web at www.atlantaxplosion.com or call 678-908-4367.
