Xplosion Take Division Lead
Today the Atlanta Xplosion leads the Southern Division Conference after a big win
in Tampa Bay 46-0. The Xplosion improved their perfect record to 4-0 halfway through the season.
The game started out with the Tampa Bay Terminators gaining control of the coin
toss and accepting the ball. Tampa Bay drove to the Xplosion 32 yard line but
that was as close as they would get all game. A fourth down sack by Xplosion #76
Kimba Reams allowed the Xplosion to take the ball over at there own 35 yard line.
Offense took the opening drive 65 yards, in which a key pass from quarterback #12
Charmaine Chin, (4-6-49 yards passing) connected to #84 Natasha Slan for 29 yards. The
drive ended with a 23-yard scramble by tailback #29 Keisha Hamilton, (6-60 yards
rushing, 1 touchdown.) The point after was no good, but the Xplosion led 6-0.
The Terminators received the ball the next possession and tried to take to the air.
However, this time, the Xplosion's secondary made quick work of them. After three
plays and a punt, the Offense took over again at their own 46-yard line. Five
plays and 54 yard's later, Xplosion running back #83 Cheryl Luther found the end
zone from three yards out. The point after was good by kicker #74 Angie Mickel
and the Xplosion went ahead 13-0.
The Terminators took the next possession to the Xplosion's 39 yard line, but
big hits by linebackers #56 Kiwanii Ash and # 2 Toni Fuller forced them to punt.
"Our defense has pitched three shutouts this year so far," second year head coach
Phil Beniamino commented. "They know how to turn it up when they need to."
The offense regained the ball again at their own 32-yard line. Jessalyn Martin,
#16, went 60 of those yards to the end zone to make the game a 19-0 deficit for the Terminators.
After three more quick attempts by the Terminators offense, they were forced to punt again.
This time rookie running back, #18 Lee Lee Cannon, took the ball 74 yards and the score grew
to 25-0. The point after was good by Mickel and the score was 26-0. "This girl is
special," says Beniamino of Cannon. "She is still trying to learn the game.
She sure is fun to watch."
After a huge Kick-off, 2 incomplete passes, and a sack by linebacker #41 Angela Rowe,
the Xplosion ended up with the ball again in excellent field position. One play later,
fullback #43 D'Lon Herbert rambled the distance to give the Xplosion yet a bigger lead
to 32. Once again Angie Mickel was good with the extra point and the Xplosion took a
33-0 halftime lead. "Our offensive line dominated up front today, Beniamino added.
These girls never get any of the glory but our team knows that without them we wouldn't
be 4-0 right now."
The second half was dominated by the Xplosion's defense. They forced two fumbles
along with an interception. Mickieon Dozier #23 stepped in front of a pass and
returned it 24 yards for yet another score.
Also in the second half, Quarterback #15 Kim Watson connected on a perfect pass
to #16 Jessalyn Martin for 18 yards and her second touchdown of the day. The
point after was good and the Xplosion ended the game 46-0.
"It's always good to go on the road and win a big division game like this.
I'm very proud of my girls today," Beniamino said. "However, we're only half
ways through the season? We have to keep getting better each week."
The Xplosion take this week off and return on the road June 3rd when they head to Baton Rouge.
